Melissa’s Tearoom and Cakes Sarzana, Italy

As you know from my last post, I am in love with the little right down the road from us town, Sarzana, Italy, and Melissa's Tearoom and Cakes is a gem. FullSizeRender 3

Ciao! As you know from my last post, I am in love with the little town right down the road from us town, Sarzana, Italy.  My sweet friend from Berlin, Heike, told me that I needed to check out this cute tearoom, Melissa’s Tearoom and Cakes, while I was there, and mostly I needed to follow her on Instagram, as she was a German sweets sensation. As I have said before, Sarzana is a treasure trove of hip and yummy places.

Melissa’s Tearoom and Cakes is on the main drag, and you cannot miss it. It’s the store front with the charming, super cozy hunter green facade, sparkly crystal lighting, and pistachio colored cafe tables and chairs in front. Inside the deep rich hunter green walls set off the glittery silver teapots on the back wall and draw you right in. Cake stands hold several freshly baked cakes, and cupcakes are displayed like delicious jewels in a vintage glass case. In Italy, there has been a invasion of cupcakes which to me is a revelation since Italians tend to like drier, less sweet pastries and proudly defend their territory as far as pasticcerias are concerned. But I like the fact that Italians are widening their horizons. Check out Melissa’s facebook page, and definitely follow her on Instagram as her feed is pretty yummy.

Don’t worry, there are still plenty of fantastic pasticcerias in Sarzana to choose from, but I love Melissa’s balls to the walls concept of tea and cakes in a espresso and biscotti driven market.

If you’re in the hood, stop by for a visual treat. Of course, it’s a treat for your mouth, too. Like I’ve said before, go off the beaten path and explore outside your comfort zone. You never know what you’ll find…maybe even a cupcake! xx

Italian House Update

FullSizeRender 2

Well I have lived in our place for 2 months. Time for a house update.

We are still waiting for our residency cards, they are, as they say, “in process.”

Well I have lived in our place for 2 months. Time for a house update! We are still waiting for our residency cards, they are, as they say, "in process."

In the meantime, I am getting used to country life. Our renovation is slowing down in the dog days of summer, and the truth is, I a need a break from the constant banging, drilling and sawing, not to mention the bulldozer which Italian men love to work with. These guys love a bulldozer; they use it for digging, lifting and moving earth. But mostly they like the macho-ness of it all.

I am starting to see the fruits of the garden grow; we enjoyed eggplant and basil on our pizza the other night. It’s so satisfying to be eating out of the garden.

The main house is comfortable, and the kitchen works like a dream. I have been cooking like crazy. So the country life, the house and the studio are all working like a charm.

We feel like we have breathed life into this ancient fortress; the thick walls are welcoming and protective. When there are not a million construction workers on site, like on the weekends, it’s really quiet and still.

In Italy they say the house finds you, and I truly believe it. I feel quite at home. A sense of calm has washed over me.

We still have a ways to go, but just having this space in the countryside makes me enormously happy. Oh and Vivi likes it too.

I hope you will join us for a retreat someday, so we can show you around the Fortress in person.

Ciao! Workshop Studio Space

I fell in love with the workshop studio space when I toured our house for the first time. When I first stepped in, I could feel the creative vibrations.

We are getting ready because in a little over 2 weeks our first workshop will be conducted in our amazing studio space.

Full disclosure: I fell in love with the workshop studio space when I toured our house for the first time. When I first stepped in, I could feel the creative vibrations. Even though it was filled to the ceiling with junk, I managed to glean the full expanse of this gorgeous forgotten space.

I can hardly wait to share this beautiful location with our attendees when they arrive June 14th. I truly have butterflies just thinking about it. We have now closed the workshop registration for the summer courses, but stay tuned for one workshop in November. If you want to sign-up, email me to get on the list. We have 3 spaces filled already, so we will only be releasing 3 spots end of July. You can reach me at annette@annettejosephstyle.

Stay tuned for BTS of the first ever workshop at La Fortezza with Christina Wedge and some surprise style gurus.

Ciao and see you here soon. xx

My Life in Photos, May

As many of you know, I have spent the past few weeks in Italy moving into our new home there, The Fortress. To say it’s been a whirlwind of excitement would be an understatement.

I’m spending my days unpacking and prepping for students who arrive next month and spending my nights enjoying aperitivo on our terrace or sipping our own vineyard’s wine with friends.

Of course there have been many ups and downs, and I’ve been sharing a lot of my experiences on Instagram. For those of you who don’t follow me there, here’s a glimpse at my life in photos for May.
