Meet the AJS Workshop Team:: Anne Sage

We’re getting closer and closer to our Italian workshop, and I for one can’t wait. In the spirit of the workshop, today I’m introducing you to talented Anne Sage. Anne is our social media expert for our Italian workshop, and beyond her social expertise, she’s the blogger behind Anne Sage and the author behind Sage Living. You can even find my own home in her book. Learn more about awesome Anne below!

Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself:

A: Your full name? Anne Elizabeth Sage
Where are you from? Grew up in Toronto but now live in LA.
What do you do for a living? A little bit of everything! I write a lifestyle blog at annesage.com as well as manage all the related social media platforms; I do props and interiors styling for photo shoots; and I wrote an interior design book called Sage Living that was released last fall.

Q: What is your role on the AJS Workshop Team?
A: I’m the resident social media expert; I’ll be giving a presentation on social media best practices, and I’ll be on-hand throughout to offer guidance on all things Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and blogging!

Q: Tell us about your background.
A: I have a degree in English from Stanford University and moved to New York City where I worked in brand strategy after college. While in New York I started my blog as a creative outlet, never expecting that it would become my full time job! In the years since, I’ve also co-founded an online lifestyle publication (Rue Magazine) as well as honed my interiors, photography, writing, and related editorial and content creation skills.

Q: Describe your expertise for the workshops.
A: The world of social media can be a tricky one to navigate! From growing a following and managing various platforms to engaging authentically with an audience, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. I love to share my 8 years of experience in the constantly evolving world of online content — including the tips, tricks, and habits for the most effective use of the valuable and fun tools social media has to offer!

Q: What do you enjoy most about being a part of the AJS Workshop Team (or if this is your first experience, what are you most looking forward to?)
A: There is
always something to learn! We get to explore a new culture through Annette’s expert eyes, benefit from the knowledge of the other workshop experts, and get to know each other on a personal level too. Last year I went home with my brain — and my heart — racing on overdrive!

Q: What is one app (business related or not) you absolutely cannot live without?
A: I use the VSCO photo editing app several times a day — both to process my iPhone photos for Instagram, but also to add an extra dimension to the Canon photos I shoot for my blog. It’s an essential for sure!

Q: Where is your favorite place to travel?
A: I have a big soft spot for the Mediterranean! I spent a summer in Nice as a teenager and completely fell for the area. And of course Annette’s workshops have deepened my love of the region tenfold!

Q: What is one travel destination you hope to cross off your bucket list?
A: I’ve never been to Mexico and I’m dying to go. Mexico City for the culture and Tulum for the beaches sounds like a dream!

Q: What is your favorite part of exploring new destination?
A: I love to get up early and go for a walk, grab breakfast, and be amongst the locals as they start their day.

Q: What is one travel essential you’re sure to pack on every trip?
A: I never leave home without a big scarf for the plane, a bag of nuts for emergency snacking situations, and a jar of
Kimberly Parry Organics Facial Balm, which cures all manner of travel related skin problems!

Q: Just for fun (and in true Annette style), what is your go-to cocktail?
A: I’m not a huge drinker — I don’t think I’ve ever finished a whole cocktail by myself! — but I’m definitely excited to take a little sip of Annette’s Aperol Spritz this year!

Sage Living:: the design book with soul

Last weekend I curled up with my friend Anne Sage‘s new design book, Sage Living, Decorate for the Life You Want. I wasn’t surprised that it was beautiful or unique because that pretty much sums up Anne in a nutshell.

However, what did surprise me was that this book is really a helpful guide on how to be happy at home. It’s a simple premise, but it’s never been done. Anne is not only brilliant in her approach to design and how it ties to our sense of well being, but this book will have you looking at your spaces and how you live in a fresh new way.

Lucky for me she agreed to come along and share her expertise with my June Style + Photo Workshop students in Italy this summer. Of course she wowed the crowd, and she will be back next June to do it again!

Lucky for you she has written one of the most soulful design books out there. While most design books cover beautiful spaces page after page, chapter after chapter, in a rather formulaic fashion, Anne goes the extra mile and illustrates the relationship between our home and our happiness.

Anne reminds us that “Your best life starts at home.”

In Sage Living, Anne Sage opens the door to 28 covetable dwellings designed to boost the dreams of their occupants, from the sunny kitchen of a holistic nutritionist to the eclectic living room of a world traveler. With page after page of stunning interiors and design tips for every room, Sage Living goes beneath the stylized surface to help you decorate for the life you want.

When Anne asked me if she could photograph the entertaining spaces in our home for this book, I was not only honored, but excited to share why our home is the place that makes me and my entire family feel happy, centered, and at ease. We have created a place to make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed.

You may know Anne as the City Sage, but I know her as a smart cookie. This book will change the way you look at your space and yes, even your life. I urge you to pick up a copy. It’s not only a design book; it goes deep and will have you thinking about the way you live in the most important space in your life: your home.

Thank you Anne for including our home. Our happiest place.

The Handsome Devil

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas! Today my adorable friend Anne Sage is sharing her favorite kind of cocktail. Anne was one of the original co-founders of Rue Magazine and I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with her. She’s a very clever and stylish girl. She’s also the brains and beauty behind her personal blog: The City Sage which features a mix of interiors, fashion, style, and culture. Her blog was named alongside Apartment Therapy and design*sponge as one of 14 must-read blogs by Martha Stewart Living, and recently named one of 23 Instagrammers to follow by The Huffington Post (@citysage). Take it away, Anne!

My secret: I’m not much for alcohol. Coffee is my one true weakness when it comes to drinking. So I asked my friend Talmadge Lowe, the cocktail master at Pharmacie LA, to create a cocktail that is based around that deep dark caffeinated elixir of the gods. He came back to me with this. It’s called the The Handsome Devil, which Talmadge just happens to be. Yeah yeah, Tal, we get the hint! – Anne

The Handsome Devil

Recipe Courtesy of Pharmacie LA

  • Housemade coffee syrup – 1/2 oz
  • Cognac – 1/2 oz
  • Rye – 1/2 oz
  • Sweet Vermouth – 1/2 oz
  • Chocolate Bitters – 2 dashFor Housemade Coffee Syrup:
  • one part rum
  • one part sugar
  • one part espresso beans soaked for 2 days
  • after soaking for two days add a little water heat until the sugar is dissolved then strain

It’s hard to believe that this is the last Cocktail of the Week for the year. I’ve had so much fun with this series and tomorrow I’ll will give you a sneak peek at a new series that will start next year. Thank you to Anne and everyone else who made this column such a success! XO
