Make it Fresh for Spring from Staples :: A Woodsy Themed Baby Shower

Staples Welcome to a series of posts about how to best use the Staples Copy & Print  department of Staples Inc.

Over the next 6 weeks, I will be posting parties tips and easy ways to promote your small business with customized and branded products available at Staples Inc.  I will show you how to create themed parties for friends and family, plus how to incorporate fun party ideas for your customers to ring in spring. It’s really easy with the copy and print customized offerings on Staples Inc. website.

When I tucked into the Staples Inc. website to look for products to use for my baby shower, I was so excited to see the vast selection. One of the things that really struck me was that the graphics were so well done. I decided on a “woodsy themed baby shower” based on the sweet graphic depicted on this invitation.

Staples *Party tip :  I like to start with an invitation; it’s an easy way to pick the theme.

Then it was just a matter of buying items off of the Staples Inc. website that went along with this darling invitation. I ordered a banner with a foxy graphic. I used dragonfly print tissue paper to cover the table, and I used small pieces of log and moss with toy deer scattered about as the table decor. I cut quince branches from the yard for the centerpiece and scattered blossoms around the table .The setting for this baby shower was a woodsy wonderland.

Staples * Party tip :These craft paper tags from Staples Inc. worked great for the campfire mug take away gift for guests. *Note: one of my favorite hostess tips is to put together a little something for guests to take home. It’s a simple detail that goes a long way. How cute is this dragonfly paper?!

Staples * Party tip : Keep food simple and fun! I love the idea of milk and cookies. (*Look for my chocolate chip cookie recipe on the bottom of the post.) Use baby bottles and festive straws for guests to enjoy “milk and cookies.” Cheese and salami with breadsticks look like branches and logs in the woods. Food can be that simple, yet also be party-themed and whimsical.

Staples I had no idea Staples Inc. carries a huge variety of stuffed animals. These 2 cuties went beautifully with my theme and were a great gift to give to our mom-to-be. I love that idea!

Staples This cute wrapping paper and beautiful brown satin ribbon are also available through Staples Inc. Staples Inc. has a great selection of party products including balloons.

Chocolate Egg Cream
Makes 1 serving

You will need:

– 3 tablespoons dark chocolate syrup (Hersheys syrup is great)
– 1/2 cup club soda

Preparation:

Mix the milk and syrup then top off with the club soda.
Baby Shower

Asparagus Quiche
Makes 1- 8″ round Quiche serves 8-10

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

For the filling you will need:

– 1/2 lb. fresh asparagus
– 8 eggs
– 1 cup shredded mozzarella
– 1 cup half and half
– 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preparation:

In a large bowl whisk eggs and cream and cheese and salt. Reserve 5 spears of asparagus for the top of the quiche. Cut the remainder into 1/2 inch pieces and add to the egg mixture. Combine and set aside make the crust.

For the crust you will need:

– 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
– 1 stick of butter chilled and cut into 1/2 cubes
– 1/4 cup chilled water
– 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preparation:

In the bowl of a standing mixer place the flour and the butter and salt. Using the paddle attachment on medium speed, combine the butter and flour until it resembles pebble size crumbs. Next add water until mixture comes together into a ball. *(note you may need to add more water to combine)

Roll the ball of dough out on a floured board into a 10″ disk about 1/8 thick. Place into an 8 inch ceramic quiche pan. With a paring knife cut the overhanging dough edge around the perimeter of the dish so there is a clean edge all the way around. Use the excess dough you cut off the edge to make the make the decorative scallop border. Use a 1 inch round scallop cutter, place the scallop rounds on the edge of the shell, over-lapping all the way around the outer edge.

Once you have finished the decorative edge, place the egg mixture into the shell. Add the reserved whole asparagus spears on top and place into the oven. Bake for 60 minutes at 350 degrees F. Baby Shower

Devils Food Cupcakes

These are the same recipe from my cookbook Picture Perfect Parties. I ran this recipe on my blog last week. Feel free to check it out here. *(Note I cut the cake recipe in half but made the full frosting recipe)

baby shower in a snap!

IMG_9261 copy DSC_0098-e1379412772512 Last weekend my daughter Alex and I threw a baby shower for her childhood baby sitter. When my kids were little Vicky essentially lived at our house and watched the kids. So as my daughter pointed out it seemed only natural that we should throw her a baby shower. As most of your know I am about to launch on a national book tour, so the timing was very crucial. Alex and I decided the only date that worked for both of us and the expectant Mom would be Sept 15th. The challenge? It was the day after one of the biggest holidays of the year, Yom Kippur and we are not allowed to work, and we fasted all day, and spent the day in temple. With 25 people to feed I had to come up with a plan. The menu and decor had to be able to be implemented on a Sunday morning. I know some of you have busy lives and still want to be able to throw a quick and easy and of course fabulous party so here was my course of action and it worked like a charm.
DSC_0084-e1379412818628 DECOR – 2 days before I put the decor together. The theme for the party was “onesies.” I bought a onesie set to hang on a clothes line with clothes pins, wrapping paper for the dessert table, blue and white checked tissue to line dessert trays, baby bottles for drinks, blue and white striped straws, and sweet baby onesie cookies individually wrapped for guests to take home. I used vintage jars tied with blue and white ribbon, flowers from the grocery (baby’s breath and yellow carnations with some greens). *Tip: buy flowers that are going to last if you buy ahead. Most flowers will last for 2 -3 days and still look great!
IMG_9273 IMG_9222 IMG_9254 FOOD – 2 days before I bought ingredients for the Apple  Walnut Salad (mixed greens, apples, walnuts, lemon, red onion), assorted cheeses, grapes, fig jam, assorted crackers, rustic bread, pimento cheese, fruit salad, and IKEA Swedish meatballs. For dessert I bought cupcakes, brownies (*tip- dust the store bought brownies with powdered sugar and place on a cookie sheet lined with checked bakers tissue in a polka dot pattern), cookies, chocolate popcorn (*tip- place popcorn in individual festive paper cups and mark the tray with “she’s about to pop signs”), salt water taffy, and blue foil Hershey’s kisses. We served pink lemonade in baby bottles with stripey straws and iced tea out of pitchers. By buying things that were easy to assemble and “heat and serve”, I was able to put the whole shower together in 4 hours the morning of the baby shower.
IMG_9264 IMG_9250 DSC_0032-e1379412495360 DSC_0013 DSC_0006 DSC_0003 GAMES – 3 days before Alex was in charge of the games: a “Trivia” game where the guest with the highest number of right answers about Vicky’s  childhood wins a prize. A “Guess the Girth” where guests guesstimate the girth of the Mom to be with lengths of yarn, and last but certainly not least: “My Water Broke” where tiny babies are frozen in ice cubes and the first baby to break free in the thawed ice cube placed in the guests drinks, wins a prize. Needless to say… a huge success! Nicely done Alex! IMG_9229 DSC_0063 DSC_0068-e1379412726512 It was really fun to plan and execute a party with my daughter, especially for someone that was such a special part of her childhood. Next time you need to plan a party in a snap remember planning and organizing ahead are key, and IKEA Swedish meatballs can sometimes save the day.

Stay tuned for a quick + fun party DIY…
