Easy Flower Arranging

IMG_25742 IMG_2478 IMG_2499

While it might seem like a daunting task, arranging your own flowers can be simple yet stunning, and honestly, nothing gives me more pleasure than to arrange flowers for my own home or parties. If you follow a few easy steps, you’ll be arranging your own flowers in no time!

When beginning the design process, I start with what’s available at my local market (and even Trader Joe’s!), and I try to select a strong color theme like pink or even white. Selecting just one color flower, but choosing several varieties in that same color, is an easy way to pack a punch without a lot of thought. It honestly cuts way down on the stress, especially if you’re not quite ready for combining colors.

However, if you want to give it a go, follow these steps. For this arrangement, I selected a few colors that go well together like pink and lavender.

Step one: clean the bottom of the stems, and make a fresh cut.

Step two: place all the fillers in your container. For this arrangement, I’ve chosen a pitcher for my container, and Queen Anne’s Lace and Baby’s Breath as fillers. Pro tip: this pitcher from Ikea (one of my favs, as you know) is an ideal flower container!

Step three: add in your larger blooms. Here, that’s ranunculus and hyacinth. Be sure to work your way around the vase or pitcher. Either move around the table as you work, or spin your container to make sure your stems are even.

Step four: step back and fluff your arrangement as needed. Try to change the water every 2-3 days, and cut the stems on a diagonal every few days, too. This will keep your arrangement fresh and pretty!

A Haunting Centerpiece :: Skull Floral Arrangement

Hi everyone! I’m Nicole, Annette’s blog manager and friend, and I’m back to bring you a haunting centerpiece for your Halloween table: a skull floral arrangement. In case you don’t know, my absolute favorite holiday is Halloween. Last year, I dressed my mantle for the occasion, and this year, I decided to add a little spook to my table.

One of the things I’ve learned from Annette is to always be looking for vessels that can be used for flowers, food, and more. When I stumbled upon this black skull candy jar at Target, my creative wheels started turning. Take the lid off and voila – the perfect vase (I loved this one, too).

Imagine my excitement when I found seasonal fall flowers in bold, jewel tones including ones that look strikingly similar to brains! I think they’re spot-on.

When it comes to flower arranging, I use floral bricks to keep my flowers in place and fresh. Cut them down to size for your vessel, and follow the directions on the packaging. Make sure you allow your bricks to submerge completely in the water on their own (instead of pressing them down). Then, just have fun arranging the colors and mixing in different textures. I think greenery would have really added another dimension to this particular arrangement, so just use what you have – even if it’s from your yard!

Whatever you use, this easy DIY skull floral arrangement centerpiece will certainly add the right amount of eerie fun to your Halloween holiday table. Happy Halloween!

Spring Paella Party

IMG_6353 IMG_6356 IMG_6358 IMG_6354

Hi ! Nicole here, I am Annette’s web manager, and friend, back in the fall, Annette invited me and a few other fabulous friends to come to her home and enjoy a spring-inspired paella party and photo shoot for Atlanta’s Magazine Home. Of course we were there to shoot a spread for the premiere issue of the magazine, but we were also there to enjoy the yummy food and great company. In between posing this way and that, we were able to feast on an incredible paella dish along with a cheese plate fit for a king and heavenly pots de creme. Suffice to say there wasn’t a hungry person in the house.

Even though the party was held in the late fall, the weather could not have been better. It was just cool enough to enjoy drinks by the fire, but warm enough still to sit with the windows open and take it all in. The ambiance was perfect and the company couldn’t have been better. We ate, we laughed, and we smiled for the camera. I have to say, I had no idea whatsoever how much work went into a magazine shoot. It is definitely not all fun and games (although we did have fun). There was an incredible amount of time spent on set-up and angles and color and candlelight and lighting. I was in awe of it all. It was a lot of hard work for the team, but lots of fun for the guests to experience. When do you every get to watch the pros at work and be a super model…um never. I loved it! Thanks for the memories Annette!

Stay tuned for the paella recipe later this week!
